Impasto art is paint loaded onto the knife and laid on thick, so each ridge stands up off the canvas and holds a shadow along one edge. How thick depends on the piece — ridges on one canvas can stand several times higher than on another, up to around eight millimeters. That variation is the one thing a print cannot copy.
